Famous Local Temples Near Our Hotel

Thailand is the land of Buddhism so there are many buddhist temples scattered all over Chiang Mai. If you wish to visit temples near our hotel, we list here the temples you can visit. ("Wat" means "temples" in Thai)

 


Wat Aranyavas (วัดอรัญญวาส)

A local temple with more than a hundred year of history, Aranyavas Temple is built for the local villagers to make merit according to Buddhist teachings. At the top of the hill in the temple area lies a white castle-like structure, this 'Loha-prasart' was built to cover the Buddha's relics said to be contained in the original pagoda. The Loha-prasart is unique in that it is the first and only Lanna-style Loha-prasart in the world.

Wat Ton Gwen (วัดต้นเกว๋น)

Wat Ton Kwen or Wat Intarawas is a 150-year-old historical temple of Chiang Mai as it used to be a rest-stop for the Grand Buddha's Relics procession done by the ruler of Chiang Mai in ancient times. The procession usually took several weeks and made pitstops at various temples along the way. During the stop, the local people will come pray and ask for blessings from the Grand Buddha's relics.


The highlight of the temple is the Lanna-style architecture and its beautiful sculpted wooden structure by famous Lanna artist of his time. The temple was awarded for its architectural beauty, if you have time, this is definitely a temple worth a visit.

Wat Prathat Doi Kham (วัดพระธาตุดอยคำ)

Wat Prathat Doi Kham or Wat Subanbanpot is one of the oldest temple in Chiang Mai at 1,300 years old. Locals like to come here to ask for blessings and enjoy the Lanna architecture. The highlight of the temple is the big golden pagoda. From the temple you can get the view of the city of Chiang Mai and in the evening, you can enjoy the light-up of the giant Buddha at the temple as well.

Wat Prathat Doi Nok (วัดพระธาตุดอยนก)

A popular spot for visitors both local and abroad, Wat Prathat Doi Nok is located on top of the mountains and many come here in the early morning to catch the sunrise or stay later to see the sunset. It is famous of its scenic fogs that cover the top of the mountains and roll in like the waves of the sea. The best time to catch this phenomena is around 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. from December to March, which is the winter season.

Wat Mae Saap Nuea (วัดแม่สาบเหนือ)

Wat Mae Saap Nuea was built by the Thai Leu (Chinese ethnic people from the southern province of China) community who had settled here hundreds of years ago. The temple is famous for its many head monks both local and from other provinces of Thailand. On Sundays, they provide free lessons on Buddhist teachings for local students and those who are interested.


They also have a 400-year-old jackfruit tree at the front of the temple.
